J.H. Leavy & Co. is one of the oldest established fruit and vegetable wholesaling businesses in the Brisbane Markets at Rocklea, and has been trading since the early 1900’s. The Tighe family purchased the business from Mr Jim Leavy in the early 1970’s and it has been under their successful direction to the present time. During this period, the company has expanded and grown along with highly respected farms and pack houses that are pleased to have been supplying us top quality fruit and vegetables for wholesale for well over thirty years.
We have a strong workforce of loyal and committed staff including several long term members who have been with us for 15 to 30 years. We continually provide staff training in safety, quality control and skills improvements. J. H. Leavy & Co. limits and specialises in its product range. Presently the fruit department handles all citrus products, mangoes, stone fruits of all descriptions, avocados, and melons. The vegetable department handles cucumbers, snow peas, gourmet and roma tomatoes, zucchini, pumpkins and chokoes. However, we are not limited to these lines, and would expand each department as the necessity arises. The external auditor, SAI Global, performs a bi-annual audit to ensure we conform to the WQA and CODEX HACCP quality assurance systems. We have documented agreements in place with all of our growers so that we are complying with the Horticulture Code of Conduct.

Markets and customer base:
We distribute product to all major markets in each capital city on a daily basis (where required). Our customer base through the Brisbane Markets include the major chain stores, local independent retailers, secondary wholesalers, greengrocers, and exporters, all of whom can come to the market on a daily basis. Our sales floors are situated in a prominent position within the Brisbane Markets and all buyers within the market have the opportunity to inspect, taste and purchase our products.
Warehousing facilities:
We currently operate our “state of the art” warehouse from the newly developed South Gate East Precinct of the Brisbane Markets.
Specially designed in conjunction with our major growing partners, our Coldroom facilities have been constructed using the latest technologies to give optimum temperature management for all varieties of fruit and vegetables. With over 3000 square metres of refrigeration, broken up into 9 different temperature zones, we can offer our growers and customers the capacity to store and distribute over 1000 pallets of produce from short term to long term periods.
Within this facility we can offer ripening and fast cooling services for up to 96 pallets of produce at any one time.
Four sealed loading docks and an all weather finger dock enable us to maintain the “Cold Chain” from farm gate to Brisbane and the rest of the world.
Included in the new warehouse is our new administration offices which has reception, meeting, boardroom and conferencing facilities.
Our sales floor also has 3 separately controlled cold rooms with a capacity of 70 pallets which we use for the displaying of stock.
